Ami de Didier Depond et passionné par le Champagne, Alvaro Palacios le Grand vigneron du Priorat en Espagne nous a rendu visite au Mesnil le mois dernier, véritable échange viticole. Une arrivée en force avec un groupe d'amis charmants sans oublier sa femme Cristina.
Ainsi, Alvaro & Cristina Palacios, Sebastian Alegrett & Claudia Rolon, Gustavo Hernandez & Olympia de Castro et Juan Hernandez ont animé la maison avec leurs louanges sur le vin et leurs chants chaleureux ; aidés de quelques flacons inoubliables, chaque personne exprimait le vin à sa façon.

A close friend of Didier Depond and passionate about Champagne, Champagne Salon – Delamotte welcomed Alvaro Palacios the great wine farmer from the Priorato in Spain to Le Mesnil, a veritable viti-cultural exchange. An arrival with a swarm of charming friends and Alvaro’s charming wife, Cristina.
Alvaro & Cristina Palacios, Sebastian Alegrett & Claudia Rolon, Gustavo Hernandez & Olympia de Castro et Juan Hernandez brought joy and effervescence to the House with their praise of wine and their heart-warming song; helped by a handful of unforgettable bottles, each person expressed their wine sentiment with their own personal flair.

Demain nous attaquons les premières parcelles au Mesnil, le temps sec nous épargne bien des difficultés, que la fraîcheur nous impose déjà au niveau de la maturité.

Si quelques parcelles montrent encore des degrés inférieurs à 9°, une majorité trouve une bonne maturité physiologique et un degré suffisant. La vendange se fait à petits pas.

Tomorrow we will bring in the first blocks of Le Mesnil. Dry anti-cyclone weather these past few days has helped the quality, but maturity is still slow due to cool weather.

Some blocks are still under 9% potential alcohol but the majority of the parcels are showing good physiological maturity and sufficient sugar levels. We tread gently through the versatile nature of this 2007 harvest.

Des journées pluvieuses et humides s'enlacent avec d'autres ensoleillées, les températures sont enfin estivales.

Point maturité hier dans les vignes et dernier rognage à partir d'aujourd'hui. Cramant est autour des 5,3 degrés d'alcool potentiel et Le Mesnil autour des 5,6°. Bien en retard par rapport aux noirs qui ont une moyenne de 7,8°. Le Chardonnay étant toujours un peu plus lent au démarrage, on peut penser voir Le Mesnil gagner 2° par semaine dans les 2 prochaines semaines, idéal! Ainsi on se prépare à rassembler les troupes dans la semaine du 20 août, et démarrer les parcelles les plus précoces à partir de la mi-semaine. les risques de pourriture du mois de juillet sont loins, avec une vigne en bon état et sec. Une belle maturité nous attend.

Sunny days are dancing with stormy weather. If Cramant, further north, has Chardonnay at around 5,3% potential alcohol, Le Mesnil Blancs are closer to 5,6% on average. The Pinots on the other side of the Marne river and in Sezanne are showing potential alcohol around 7,8% but Chardonnay is a slow started and the gap should close as it speeds up to gaining 2% a week over the next two weeks. Generally, the overall condition of the fruit is good, any potential rot due to July weather has dried out; quality is potentially very high.

L'occasion pour les heureux propriétaires de ces 12 superbes Jaguar XK8/R de se familiariser avec un autre univers d'excellence, celui des grands champagnes Blanc de Blancs, qu'ils ont d'ailleurs fort appréciés.

On July 17th the british Jaguar XK8/XKR Enthusiasts Club stopped in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger for a tasting of champagne Salon and Delamotte.

The occasion was given for the fortunate proprietors of these 12 wonderful Jaguar XK8/R to be more familiar with another world of excellence, the one of the great blanc de blancs champagnes, which they really appreciated.

Depuis le début de la semaine nous retrouvons un doux soleil, presque printanier. Les temperatures semblent se maintenir autour des 25 degrés avec un baromètre fort, même si on annonce encore des orages à 4/5 jours d'intervalle. Les nuits sont très fraîches pour la saison, une maturité très lente qui peut retarder la vendange, mais de peu. Nous avons la possibilité de retrouver un fruit très équilibré au top départ qui serait autour du 23 août?

The weather is clement, spring-like sun and a high barometre. 25°C seems to be the norm although there are some forecasted storms in the next few days. Cool nights are also slowing the sugars which might see us moving the harvest a few days later but to much. If this cape is maintained the fruit should be very well balanced, suggesting a harvest starting around August 23rd?
